I use it reluctantly on Facebook. If I want to talk to someone, I call them. As a busy Mom, I don't have time to stop and chat when I am online. I see the value though...
What is good about IM is that there is that most sites offer a group chat feature so if you have a group that wants to meet but due to distance or time you can't meet face to face, one can do it virtually. I belong to a few state youth services networking groups and this is how we are able to include people from all over the state.
